Melissa Black

Founder & Senior Advisor

Melissa has 27 years of experience in engineering, high-end real estate development, and business management. She began her career as the lead construction engineer at Pacific Gas and Electric Nuclear plant in San Luis Obispo, CA.

After moving to Tucson, she led the development and sales of high-end, custom home communities. Her passion for sustainability and the benefits of solar energy led her to start Solar Gain and to co-found the Southern Arizona Green Chamber of Commerce (SAGCC), where she served as president for two years. Melissa holds a BSME from California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Roman Black

President / CEO

The President of Solar Gain, Inc. for the last 5 years, Roman has significant experience in commercial solar project development and sales. After earning his degree in Finance from the University of Arizona, Roman spent several years in Costa Rica expanding his knowledge and skill set in sustainable industries. While in Costa Rica, he served as project manager for the construction of custom homes that integrated LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, black water recycling and solar and wind power.

At Solar Gain, he runs the show but especially enjoys matching the customer with the right financing. Roman is a founding board member of the Southern Arizona Green Chamber of Commerce.

Christopher J. Martin

VP / Senior Advisor

Chris is both our Vice-President and owner of CJM Electric. He contributes over 30 years of commercial and residential electrical experience to Solar Gain. This experience is extremely valuable to ensure our clients that their investment in a solar power installation proceeds smoothly, in full compliance with codes and regulations.

Chris has also founded and operated several thriving businesses. One of his successes is Wilson Produce in Nogales. 


Tim Graunke

Project Development

Tim was born and raised in Tucson, AZ and is the oldest of 5 siblings. He went to Salpointe HS graduated University of Arizona in 2007 with a bachelor of economics. In early 2008, Tim moved to Honolulu & started a career in solar. Early experience as project and construction manager led to strong knowledge and understanding of installation and what it takes to complete projects on schedule within budget. He soon became lead commercial project manager for one of Hawaii's top companies in 2011. Later, he returned to Tucson and started working with Solar Gain in late 2015 developing projects pre & post contract execution.

David Schildhouse


David brings 10 years of experience in the automotive service and management field to the Solar Gain team.  A graduate of Sabino High School in Tucson, he began his career as an ASE certified automotive technician.  David developed and refined his management skills while working with leading companies like Bridgestone/Firestone, Audi and Toyota.  In 2011, he worked with a NASCAR team as a mechanic and spotter, traveling to racetracks across the country each weekend and living his childhood dream.

After years spent in Atlanta and Las Vegas, a career change in 2015 brought David back to Tucson and into the accounting field.  He is on track to graduate with a degree in Accounting in 2017 while continuing to learn the unique and exciting business of sustainable energy solutions and solar power installations.

James Martin

Business Development

James partnered with Solar Gain in early 2011. James was involved with business development during the construction of the AGRISOL 1mw solar PV array at Wilson produce. James' has experience with strategic development of solar P.V. in the US-Mexico borderlands. He also is well versed in the solar residential, commercial, and agricultural sector.


Howard Schildhouse


Howard has over 40 years of broad-based experience in providing financial, operational and strategic leadership in dynamic, highly competitive business environments. He began his career with a “Big Eight” firm in public accounting, and then held various financial-based positions of increasing responsibility with The Progressive Corporation, a Fortune 200 company. Since moving to Tucson in 1998, Howard has been the controller or chief financial officer with companies in a wide range of industries. He holds an MBA from Case Western Reserve University and a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree from the University of Cincinnati. He is a Certified Public Accountant.

Max Chellemi

Project Engineer

Born in Costa Rica and graduated with a B.S. in General Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Max Chellemi is a bilingual construction machine. After helping start iCracked, an iPhone repair company in Silicon Valley, he returned to San Luis Obispo to become a Cell Site Acquisition expert where he served contracts for AT&T primarily. He went on to gain residential and commercial construction expertise as he built a house in Costa Rica and estimated, project engineered, and project managed for an electrical contractor in Southern California.

Landon Concagh

Project Manager

Landon's first residential solar installation was in 2001. He has his AA in drafting and design as well as a Bachelor's Degree in project management. Landon has managed and installed over 28 megawatts including off grid, wind turbines, trackers, utility, commercial, and residential scale projects. He currently enjoys his role as a project manager. He believes in an empowering management style and he strives to pass it on to the Solar Gain lead team members on a daily basis. For fun, he enjoys mountain biking, camping, and the lake.

Brian Smith

Commercial Superintendent

Brian is a NABCEP certified PV installation professional with more than six years of experience in both residential and commercial PV projects throughout southern Arizona. With a Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering & additional photovoltaic training, he uses his advanced education to oversee the multiple facets of complex photovoltaic installation projects. Brian is also Involved in solar guild, a local nonprofit that develops solar projects that benefit the community. Through solar guild he has led numerous projects, including biosphere 2 and Catalina state park.

Matt Hicock

Residential Superintendent

Matt is a 30-year native to Tucson, AZ and has 9 years invested to the photovoltaic trade. Quality is his number one priority, believing that if it's worth doing at all, it's worth doing right. In addition to his commitment to the industry and his clients, he also serves as a Petty Officer Third Class Reserve Air crewman in the US Navy. Hoo Yah!

Sol Hassler

Commercial Designer

Mr. Hassler has 8 years of solar installation and design experience. He holds an Associate’s Degree & a NABCEP Solar Electrical Installation Certification. His position with Solar Gain Inc. is Lead Commercial Designer. Sol has made Tucson his home for the last 10 years and has a deep fascination with sustainable design. He is always perusing several personal projects outside of work, the subject matter of which varies greatly.

Scott Reynolds

Lead Electrician

Scott is an electrical engineer/electrician. He is a proud marine veteran and has 30 years’ experience from NY to AZ with 10+ megawatts solar in his resume. Commercial and residential electrical experience rounds out his specialties

Santino “Sonny” Perez

Lead Technician

Sonny was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. He has been installing P.V. Solar for 4 ½ years. “I started at Solar Gain in 2014, I love working for this company, couldn’t ask for better co-workers and the bosses are great. Huge to be with this company as we continue to grow, Thank You Solar Gain!”

Brett Lange

Lighting Specialist

Brett is an electrical superintendent/ lighting specialist. He is a native Tucson resident, proud family man, Scouter, and father of 2. He has 30 years of electrical experience in the alternative energy & electrical fields including years of experience in the lighting design field.


Will Lawton

Warehouse Manager

Being born & raised in Tucson, Arizona, Will understood the importance of conserving natural resources. It was evident early on that his career path & studies in college would need to include something that involved conserving the environment. Will majored in Natural Resources: Conservation and Management at the University of Arizona. Upon graduating, he came across the opportunity to work for a solar company, which was a great way to get into conserving precious natural resources, while also being a part of an expanding effort to develop & produce renewable energy.
